Employee Spotlight: Chris Peterson

Employee Spotlight: Chris Peterson

Every person at Cybba plays a key role in our success. Now in the Employee Spotlight is Chris Peterson. Read about his journey at Cybba, and his insights on what has contributed to his success as a Senior Frontend Developer.

How long have you been in this position?

I started back in October 2015, so almost 3 years now.

How did you start at Cybba and what made you want to join?

I originally interviewed for a QA position that I didn’t receive, but then was recalled for a Junior Developer position shortly thereafter.

After interviewing the first and second times, I got a great vibe from the tech team. They came off as a tight-knit group and a great cultural fit. It just made sense for me to join and the rest is history.

What tips would you give to someone working with their development team in the tech industry?

Don’t be afraid to work closely with your development/tech team. Maintaining a positive relationship with those that develop your product can give you a stronger understanding of the functionality and possible extensions. It’s also good to have a foot in the door when you need something a little outside of the box. More importantly, however, ask questions and don’t assume anything!

What do you enjoy the most about your career?

I really enjoy that I can spend time researching and developing new functionalities for the platform that are constantly being added to our feature set. Every day is different at Cybba; there’s always a new challenge to solve or a new project to work on – I never get bored. More importantly, I love that I have a say in a lot of decisions and that my opinion is heard when changes are being made.

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

Two things most people don’t know about me are that shortly before I started at Cybba I had lost nearly 100 lbs, and I’ve donated 12+ inches of hair three times in the past 8 years (most recently 16 inches in August 2018).

What brands/companies do you personally admire?

I really like brands in the fitness industry that back a solid offering while not being overzealous with their designs and product packaging. Some include: Rogue, Eat the Bear, Quest, and Vega.

What is your favorite place in Boston?

Not quite Boston, but I love spending time at Nightshift Brewery over in Everett.

What are you currently binge-watching?

I recently finished Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime and am currently re-watching the original two seasons on Netflix.

How has Cybba helped in your career development?

Having the freedom to constantly add to the feature set and explore new avenues in development has really allowed me to learn a lot about my craft and hone my skills. That said, I never expected things like having as much client facing and interdepartmental interaction. It has certainly helped me improve my communication skills with technical details and the inner-workings of the product.

What do you find the most challenging at Cybba?

One of the most challenging things at Cybba is how quickly things change and keeping up with it. There’s always something interesting in the works that forces you to wear a lot of different hats and learn to pivot at a moment’s notice.

What is your proudest moment at Cybba?

The proudest I’ve been at Cybba can’t really be confined to a single moment. In the early fall of 2017, I was insanely proud of how the tech team came together to make the change to Cybba so seamlessly and quickly. But I am also very impressed by how far the product has developed since day one of Cybba. It is crazy to me the amount of progress we have made in just a few short months!

If you could switch your job with anyone else within Cybba, whose job would you want?

I would probably swap positions with our analysts. I really enjoy dealing with streams of data and positioning it in a myriad of ways on the development side of things, so I imagine it is the most natural fit for me in another department of the company. Data science is a booming and fascinating field that Cybba has a lot of potential to tap into and explore.
